WAVE, winner of Interior Design Award

Celebrates With U.S. Circuit Tour “Catch The Wave”

The international design community has spoken and the winner of Interior Design Magazine’s Best of Year Award (BoYA) in the Outdoor Furniture Category is: Royal Botania’s “WAVE” hammock. After an intense online voting process, which garnered nearly 30,000 votes from leading architects and designers, the finalists were chosen. A jury of design professionals including the magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Cindy Allen then selected the winner in each category. A newcomer to the US market, it was the first time that Royal Botania was nominated for the award and the first time it took home the honor of Interior Design’s Best of Year. No stranger to the spotlight, the WAVE also received five design nominations at Maison & Objet in Paris. Now, the US architecture and design community will have an opportunity to test-drive the product as it travels around the country on its first-ever nation-wide tour.

Unlike any other piece of its kind, it is neither a hammock, nor a sun chair, nor a parasol. It is an artwork that combines functionality with beauty and elegance. Designed by Erik Nyberg & Gustav Ström, the WAVE consists of electro-polished stainless steel and mesh. The canopy and seat sling are made from batyline. The fabric is semi-transparent while at the same time offering protection by blocking 86 percent of the sun's rays. The seat has a removable cushion in foam/fabric. WAVE is available in white, cappuccino, black or turquoise with two base options allowing for integration in the terrace or embedment into the ground. It measures an impressive 12 ft x 9.5 ft x 8 ft, yet stands on a single point. The construction gives it its unique floating impression, and allows it to withstand the elements. Plus, it can rotate 90˚ around the base, giving it additional flexibility depending on the position of the sun.

Given its grandeur, a simple US launch would not suffice. Instead the Belgian-based Royal Botania is taking a different approach and has coordinated a nation-wide tour. Architects, designers and design-savvy consumers alike are invited to “Catch the WAVE” as it travels around the country. It will be making strategic stops surrounding design/fashion/movie related events in several cities including LA, New York and Miami. Talk about elite, the first stop on the tour is a month-long stint at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Florida and the second is a cameo appearance at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
